About Us / Hickory Hurst Farm History: Family-owned since 1908, we're a fourth-generation family farm located 2.5 miles south of Chautauqua, NY. Hickory Hurst Farm operated as a dairy farm for nearly 70 years, then livestock was phased out during the early 1980s. Vegetables, chickens, eggs, pumpkins, and winter squash, had been sold at the farm while it was a dairy farm. Much of the farm was fallow and some buildings were in disrepair for 20 years until we inherited the farm in 2009. In 2010 we erected a farm stand on site and started sorting and cleaning the farm outbuildings, discovering much horse-drawn equipment of yesterday. For the past five years we've focused on growing cut flowers, herbs, vegetables, and some fruits, "bringing" the flower stand from the former residence to the farm.
Adrienne's horticulture, teaching, and radio backgrounds have smoothed the farm's transition into cut flowers and herbs. Tim's mechanical abilities have contributed to things such as creating irrigation systems and repairing farm equipment. We installed a walk-in cooler in 2011 which extended greatly reduced produce loss. That same year we joined the Chautauqua Farmers' Market for another outlet to directly market our farm products. Last year (2014) we became certified organic through NOFA-NY; that has been a boon for us. The cut flower and herb markets have worked well for us. This year we're focusing more on DIY brides and wedding flowers, along with making seasonal bouquets for weddings and special events.
We partner with a local beekeeper who maintains a bee yard on the farm and sells raw honey. We sell eggs and maple syrup products from neighboring farmers at our farm stand. Working with the local food hub has provided another outlet for our cut flowers, herbs, and veggies, too.
